As a VR headset owner, you’ve undoubtedly encountered issues with the protective foam. It gets dirty, wears out quickly, and can start to look unsightly. Luckily, there’s a stylish solution to protect your foam and give your VR headset a fresh, presentable look.
VR Cover offers perfect protection for popular headsets like the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, and HTC Vive. It fits seamlessly over the foam of your headset, safeguarding it against dirt, sweat, and wear. At the end of a long gaming session or demo, simply remove the VR Cover and toss it into the washing machine. VR Bites tested the VR Cover for both the Gear VR and the Oculus Rift DK2, and here’s what we found.
Quality Materials
After about two weeks, the VR Cover arrived tightly wrapped in a plastic envelope. Upon opening it, we were immediately impressed by the quality. This was no amateur DIY job—the craftsmanship was excellent, and the material was well-finished. The covers arrived neatly packed in a branded cloth bag. The fabric itself is sturdy and came with a fresh menthol and eucalyptus fragrance. The photos on the website didn’t quite do the product justice—it looks and feels even better in real life.
Easy Application
Inside the pouch for the Oculus Rift, we found three covers, a handy cable strap, and clear instructions printed on cardboard. Installation was simple, although it took a bit of effort on our heavily used Oculus Rift DK2. The rubber foam was worn and loose, but after a few tries, the VR Cover fit beautifully over the headset. Not only did it give the Rift a cleaner, more polished look, but it also made the headset feel more comfortable—a win-win situation.
Applying the VR Cover to the Samsung Gear VR was a bit more challenging. First, we applied a new foam to the headset. A video tutorial on the VR Cover website guided us through the process. Four Velcro pads hold the cover securely in place. After a bit of adjusting, everything fit nicely. Like the Oculus Rift, the Gear VR felt much more comfortable and looked great with the cover applied.
Material and Color Options
VR Covers come in a variety of colors and materials. The standard gray cover is available, but you can also choose from pink and blue fabrics. For those who sweat a lot—or if you’re the lucky owner of a treadmill—there’s a waterproof version available. For eco-conscious users, the Bamboo VR Cover offers a more organic option. Prices range from $15 to $29, with covers currently available for the Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift DK1/DK2, and the HTC Vive Developer Edition.
Verdict
The foam on the Oculus Rift DK2 isn’t replaceable, and for the Samsung Gear VR, backordering new foam costs around 30 euros. For just $15, you get two VR Covers that protect your foam and extend its lifespan. Even if your foam is already flat and worn out, the VR Cover provides extra comfort and a sleek look. It’s not only a great protective measure, but it also hides worn rubber and makes your headset look as good as new. You can order your VR Covers from www.vrcover.com.
