What do you need?
- A piece of cardboard (pizza box)
- A smartphone
- Two lenses
- Two magnets (19mm in diameter)
- Piece of velcro
- Rubber Band
From pizza box to VR goggles
We’ll show you how to create a virtual reality headset from pizza box. The blueprint can be downloaded from Google. The lenses are available on eBay, Amazon and AliExpress. The magnets can be found at most do-it-yourself stores. That’s all you need. Of course it is possible to buy a fully prepared model, but that isn’t fun!
Step one Google’s building plan
Download the building HERE, or go to www.google.com/get/cardboard/get-cardboard. The file a archived, you can use an archive tool like 7-zip to open it. Inside the archive is a file called Scissor-cut template.pdf. This file can be opened with a PDF-reader like Foxit Reader. When opened you can print the building plan inside. I advise you to print it in color, So you can spot the difference between cutting lines and folding lines.
Step two Glue
Cut the blueprint out. Place the pieces with the black numbers one and two on the white numbers one and two and glue them together. Then glue everything on the pizza box. Run the red line over the fold of the pizza box.
Step three carve out the box
You can carve out the headset with a Stanley knife after everything has dried. Don’t forget to put a cutting board or pad under need the box in order to avoid cutting into the table. Take your time, it’s a painstaking job.
Step four fold into each other
Fold the parts and glue or stick them together. Just look at the pictures to see how everything fits together!
Download and run the Google Cardboard app. Place your smartphone in your homemade VR headset and put the rubber band on. Have fun! If you want more Google Cardboard apps, just click on one of the menu’s on top. I’ve discussed many Android and iOS apps.
