One of the first full games that supported virtual reality was Euro Truck Simulator 2. The developers updated the game every change of the way. However, it took a while to make it work with the consumer software. Today Euro Truck Simulator is updated and works with the latest Oculus runtime 1.3. If you’re new to the game you have to change some settings first.

The first thing you need to do is enabling unknown services in the Oculus Store. Start the Oculus Store on your desktop and click on the gear icon in the upper right. Select Settings and open the page General on the left. Locate the Unknown Sources toggle and slide it to the right (a check appears instead of an X). You need to confirm the warning by clicking Allow.

The next step must be done in Steam. Open your Library, click with the right mouse button on Euro Truck Simulator 2 and choose Properties.  Open the tab BETAS and select from the dropdown menu Oculus – Experimental Oculus support (1.3.0) – 1.22. Open the tab GENERAL and click on SET LAUNCH OPTIONS. Now fill in the command -oculus and click OK. Close the Properties window and start Euro Truck Simulator.

The settings for the Vive are similar. Open the same Properties and set the beta option to Oculus, open the tab GENERAL. Click on the button SET LAUNCH OPTIONS and use the command -openvr. At the time of writing, there seems to be a minor issue with SteamVR since the game is loading in steam theater. This will probably be solved in a short time.

Euro Truck Simulator is one of the first games I devoted my first full VR hours to. I even trained to drive with a trailer (In the Netherlands you need a special driver’s license for that). This are some video’s from earlier support.

Robbert As some of you may know, I have been suffering from the aftermath of a traffic accident, a severe case of COVID-19, and a transient ischemic attack (TIA). These events have taken a toll on my physical and mental well-being, and I can no longer keep up with the demands of running a VR website and channel. I want to thank you all for your support and feedback over the years. You have been an amazing community and I have enjoyed sharing my passion for VR and gaming with you. I hope you will continue to enjoy VR and explore its possibilities. I will leave the website and channel online for now, so you can still access the content I have created. However, I will not be posting any new blogs, videos, or news. I hope you understand and respect my choice.

  1. Hi, I would like to play ETS 2 with Oculus rift cv1. I have read information above to try it. but I have a problem. There is nothing in combo box When I click beta tab to select Oculus – Experimental Oculus support (1.3.0) – 1.22. WhaT should I do to see there something? Could you help me please?

    1. Hi Mesut, I don’t know why you don’t see the bèta options. I just opened the game and see Oculus – Experiemental Oculus support (1.4.0) – 1.3. I think you have to check out the settings in Steam.

  2. Unfortunately this isnt working for me either. I tried running in safe mode as suggested above but it just wont catch. Game runs ok but its not coming through on my CV1.

Oddly American truck sim was working fine up until a few weeks ago (last time I played it) but its also not working now.

    Shame :/

    1. That’s strange I played it yesterday in VR with my Rift. Did you put -oculus in the Launch option and have you enabled the Unknown Sources?

    1. I had to disable Theater mode for the Vive to work (Properties>General> uncheck “Use Desktop Theatre while SteamVR is active”)

I also just have -openvr on its own in the launch options – all lower case.
